On Monday, June 2nd at the Salina City Commission meeting, Mayor Greg Lenkiewicz addressed the public concerning the Cozy Inn lawsuit that was filed against the City of Salina on February 19th, 2024.&nbsp;

After two executive sessions, Mayor Lenkiewicz issued written statements regarding the publicity over the federal lawsuit that is currently pending in the&nbsp;United States District Court for the District of Kansas.

Letters to the editor are generally found in the first section of the newspaper, or towards the beginning of a magazine, or in the editorial page. They can take a position for or against an issue, or simply inform, or both. They can convince readers by using emotions, or facts, or emotions and facts combined. 

Letters to the editor are usually short and tight, rarely longer than 300 words.

Using a few carefully placed letters, you can generate plenty of community discussion. You can also keep an issue going by preventing it from disappearing from the public eye. You can stimulate the interest of the news media and create more coverage for the matters you're working on. The Salina League of Women Voters held its 2024 General Election Forum on Oct. 20 at 1:30 in the Watson Room at the Stiefel Theatre in Salina.

Cope Notes is a text message-based service that provides individuals with randomly timed messages that contain anything from psychology facts to exercises and journaling prompts. Every subscriber’s text sequence is unique so that no two users ever receive the same message at the same time. 

Each <a href="https://copenotes.com/">Cope Notes</a> text must first undergo a thorough review process by a panel of peer-support advocates and mental health professionals, in order to ensure that the messages will have a positive effect on the subscriber’s health. The ultimate goal of the service is to train the brain to disrupt negative thoughts and promote a more positive pattern of thinking.

"We believe in the importance of mental health. We want to ensure our residents have access to the resources they need to stay healthy and thriving," said Saline County Health Officer Jason Tiller. "In my own personal experience with Cope Notes, I have found that the right messages seem to come at exactly the right time. It was been an uplifting experience for me, and I am thrilled we get to continue this service to our residents."

In 2022, Saline County initially offered the service for free to 300 residents. Because of the overwhelming response and in an effort to provide the service to more Saline County residents, the program is being offered at a 50 percent discount, according to information from the county.

Saline County continues to offer Cope Notes at 50-percent discount

Not seeing precipitation totals from your area after a rain or snow event? Consider becoming a CoCoRaHS volunteer.

"CoCoRaHS is an acronym for the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network. CoCoRaHS is a unique, non-profit, community-based network of volunteers of all ages and backgrounds working together to measure and map precipitation (rain, hail and snow). By using low-cost measurement tools, stressing training and education, and utilizing an interactive website, our aim is to provide the highest quality data for natural resource, education and research applications," the organization noted on its website.

After rain, hail, or snow storms, CoCoRaHS volunteers take precipitation measurements. Those totals are then recorded on the CoCoRaHS&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cocorahs.org/ViewData/StateDailyPrecipReports.aspx?state=KS">website</a>&nbsp;(Kansas reporting).

The precipitation totals are used by various organizations and individuals, including the National Weather Service, other meteorologists, hydrologists, emergency managers, insurance adjusters, farmers and ranchers, and, of course, Salina Post.

Precipitation reporting organization seeks local, area volunteers

What’s worse than a bogus charity? A bogus charity with a dishonest fundraiser. The FTC has sued and stopped dishonest charity fundraisers that&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/consumer-alerts/2020/09/spot-and-stop-dishonest-charity-fundraisers">called people</a>&nbsp;to get them to donate to fake charities. Some prey on your kindness and desire to help people impacted by weather emergencies or a disaster. But when you get a call from a charity fundraiser, how do you know the caller is telling you the truth?

Ask the caller specific questions.

What is the charity’s name, phone number, or address? Write these down so you can confirm them later. Keep in mind that many charity names sound alike, and that sham charities often use names that are sound and look like names of legitimate charities.

How much of your donation will go directly to the programs you want to support?

Will your donation be tax-deductible? Not every call seeking a donation is from a charity. Some calls might be from Political Action Committees or other groups where donations are not deductible. See more questions to ask here.

Resist the pressure to donate on the spot.

After you’ve listened to the caller, hang up the phone and think about what they said. Then, go online and do your own research:

Search for the organization’s name and phone number, plus the word “scam” or “complaint.” What you find might help you decide if you want to make that donation.

Look up the organization’s name and address. Does it show up? If it doesn’t, that could be a sign the caller was lying to you.

FTC: How to spot and stop dishonest charity fundraisers

TOPEKA&nbsp;– The start of a new school year is an expensive time for families. If you are struggling to pay for phone and internet services, there are programs to help you stay connected.

During Digital Connectivity and Lifeline Awareness Week, the Kansas Corporation Commission joins utility regulators nationwide in encouraging those in need of assistance to apply for Lifeline and the Affordable Connectivity Program.&nbsp; Both programs help low-income individuals and families stay connected so they can access health care, attend classes, find employment, and call for help in an emergency.

Lifeline provides federal and state discounts up to $17.02 per month on phone service (wireless or residential) and broadband. Seven million Americans currently benefit from the program, including approximately 30,000 Kansans.

The Federal Communication Commission’s Affordable Connectivity Plan&nbsp; provides a monthly internet service discount of up to $30 and a one-time device discount of up to $100 for a laptop, desktop computer or tablet. According to FCC data, more than 20 million U.S. households are currently enrolled, including approximately 120,000 in Kansas.

Eligibility&nbsp;is based on income&nbsp;(at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines for Lifeline and at or below 200% for Affordable Connectivity Plan)&nbsp;or participation in certain assistance programs&nbsp;such as:

•&nbsp;&nbsp;Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) •&nbsp; Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) •&nbsp; Federal Public Housing Assistance (FHPA) •&nbsp; Veterans Pensions &amp; Survivors Pension Benefit •&nbsp; Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance •&nbsp; Tribally Administered Temporary Assistance for Needy Families •&nbsp; Head Start Tribal Programs (income based) •&nbsp; Food Distribution Program on Tribal Lands&nbsp;&nbsp;

Anyone who qualifies for Lifeline is automatically eligible to participate in Affordable Connectivity Plan. Others may still qualify for the plan if they meet any of the following criteria:

• Are approved to receive benefits under the free and reduced-price school lunch program or the school breakfast program, including the&nbsp;USDA Community Eligibility Provision.&nbsp; • Received a Federal Pell Grant during the current award year.&nbsp; • Meet the eligibility criteria for a participating broadband provider’s existing low-income program.&nbsp;

Due to higher income maximums, Affordable Connectivity Plan  also has the potential to help families that may not qualify for other types of assistance. The maximum income for a family of four to qualify for the&nbsp; program is&nbsp;$60,000 per year compared to $40,500 for Lifeline. Both Lifeline and Affordable Connectivity Plan offer additional discounts for subscribers living on tribal lands.

Plans available to help Kansans unable to pay for phone, internet services stay connected

Republicans in Saline and Dickinson County are getting&nbsp;ready to find a replacement for Kansas Senator J.R. (Jeremy) Claeys of the 24th&nbsp;District who&nbsp;is taking a job with the Trump administration.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to a story in the <a href="https://sunflowerstatejournal.com/claeys-takes-job-with-trump-administration/">Monday Sunflower State Journal</a>, Claeys in a letter to Kansas Senate Ty Masterson, has accepted a position&nbsp;with the USDA and will lead the office of Rural Business Service.&nbsp;Claeys began his new job Monday.&nbsp;

According to the Sunflower State Journal, The Rural Business&nbsp;Service provides&nbsp;financial&nbsp;assistance, technical support, and resources to help rural businesses expand, become more competitive, and promote community development.&nbsp;

According to&nbsp;sources in the&nbsp;Republican party in Saline and Dickinson&nbsp;counties, two names have been brought up&nbsp;as&nbsp;a replacement for Claeys. 

They are former Saline County Treasurer Jim Dubois and Abilene State Rep. Scott Hill.&nbsp;&nbsp;

GOP precinct committeemen and women in the district will select a replacement&nbsp;for Claeys, who was just re-elected this past November. 

A date for&nbsp;selection&nbsp;of a replacement has not been announced.&nbsp;

This	is	a	record	of	success	that	all	of	us	can	be	immensely	proud	of,	including	all	of	those	who	helped	make	this	turnaround	possible. But the	best	is	yet	to	come.

We	have	laid	the	foundation	for	massive	federal	investment,	major	manufacturers	and	service	providers	are	choosing	central	Kansas	as	their	home,	and	a new	generation	of	technological	evolution	is	taking	place	right	here	in	the	middle	of	our	state.	Rural	America	is	not	an	afterthought.	It	is	where	the	strongest	work	ethic	exists	in	our	nation.	A	resource	more	valuable	than	any	other.

I	will	always	be	proud	that	I	arrived	at	the	Statehouse	every	day	with	that	same	work	ethic	to	fight	for	rural	Kansans	and	the	people	I	serve.

GOP to find replacement for Senator J.R. Claeys

Monday noon was the deadline for residents to file to run for the Salina City Commission and the USD 305 Board of Education. 

For the November 4th&nbsp;General Election, there were 9 candidates for the City Commission including three incumbents.&nbsp;

In addition to incumbents Dr. Trent&nbsp;Davis,&nbsp;Bill&nbsp;Longbine,&nbsp;and Mayor Greg Lenkiewicz the following residents have filed for the three seats up for election:&nbsp;

Central announces Honor Roll recipients for the second semester of the 2024-2025 school year

Evergy has filed an Application with the Kansas Corporation Commission (Commission) requesting a $196.4 million rate increase (8.62%) for Evergy Kansas Central (EKC) customers. If approved, prices would become effective in September 2025. EKC residential customers would have an average monthly increase of $13.05.

Evergy's Application requests updated prices to include nearly $1 billion investment infrastructure that serves customers, adjustments for overall cost of capital and increased operating expenses. Evergy's request does not include costs related to the Panasonic Electric Vehicle battery plant or the two natural gas plants that Evergy has announced it plans to build in Kansas. Evergy has also proposed the Evergy Stay Connected Pilot program that would offer monthly credits and help income-eligible Kansas residents remain current on their account.

EKC serves about 735,000 customers in Topeka, Lawrence, Olathe, Leavenworth, Atchison, Manhattan, Salina, Hutchinson, Emporia, Parsons, Wichita, Arkansas City, El Dorado, Newton, Fort Scott, Pittsburg and Independence, among other towns and rural areas. This request does not include Evergy Kansas Metro, which serves customers in Lenexa, Overland Park and other communities near the Kansas City metro area.

The Commission regulates public utilities, including home telephone, natural gas, electric and water companies, as well as motor carriers, oil and gas pipelines, and oil and gas producers. The Commission's regulatory oversight of public utilities primarily pertains to rates and terms of service. To ensure that customers of regulated utilities are provided sufficient and efficient service and just and reasonable rates, utilities may not change their rates without Commission approval.

The Commission has scheduled a public hearing to provide Evergy Kansas customers an opportunity to learn more about the proposed rates, as well as ask questions and make comments about the proposal. The public hearing schedules appears below.

Notice of public hearing and comment period concerning Evergy rate request

A battery citation was dropped after an individual struck a male in the hand, when protesting a Gay Pride Parade/March at the Temple.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Sunday, June 1st at 2:00 pm officers received a call regarding two individuals protesting a Gay Pride Parade/March that was being held at the Temple. It was reported the two were preaching about the "sin of homosexuality" with speakers on the public property of the Temple.

Officers arrived to the scene and asked them to leave, due to a disturbance issue. The individuals then relocated to a nearby sidewalk and continued to protest. Later on at approximately 2:51 pm, Salina Police received another call about a 62-year old male wanting to press battery charges.

Officers arrived to the scene again and made contact with the victim who wanted to press charges on one of the protesting individuals. Police say, the male tried to warn the two about a city ordinance and he approached them as if he was going to touch the speakers.

One of the individuals told him to keep his distance and he agreed to not approach them. However, the 62-year old attempted to touch the speaker and one of the protestors struck the man in the hand.&nbsp;

According to the SPD a citation for battery was initially made on the protestor, but was dropped because the individual was protecting the speaker.&nbsp;

Salina Police drop battery citation after two men protest Gay Pride March at the Temple

The Salina Police Department arrested a 49-year old man on several charges after a pursuit.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Friday, May 30th in the afternoon, the Saline County Sheriff's Office, Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP), Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), FBI and SPD were all involved in what is called a "saturation/warrant patrol," or a "sweep." This was conducted from 2:00 pm to midnight.

During the sweep, authorities made a total of 16 arrests for various crimes. One highlighted arrest was a vehicle pursuit that occurred between KHP and 49-year old, Vernon Howard. However, SPD then became involved after the KHP called off from the pursuit.

The pursuit started on E. Elm in Salina and Howard continued south, reaching towering speeds. An SPD officer canceled the pursuit due to the speeds, but a few minutes later another officer discovered Howard in the 1000 block of S. Broadway and chased after him.&nbsp;The then officer deployed spike strips in the area and Howard ran over them.&nbsp;

However, Howard continued to drive a couple of miles and his vehicle became disabled in the 600 block of N. 7th St. He then got out of the vehicle and ran away as the officer chased him on-foot. 

Howard was then caught and arrested. He was charged with felony flee and elude, suspected license, felony interference and possession of marijuana/drug paraphernalia.

New podcast by the City of Salina now available to listen 

A male was arrested after assaulting his girlfriend about a game they were playing with friends at a home.

According to the Salina Police Department on Saturday, May 31st at around 2:40 am - 3:00 am, a male and female couple had friends over at the man's house on 1000 E. Minneapolis Ave.

Police say, the couple was drinking alcohol with the visitors and playing games. After the visitors left for the night, the male reportedly got upset with the woman about a dare game they played earlier that dealt with "texting your ex." The woman then decided to leave the home, but the man forcibly grabbed her phone from her hand and threw it into a room.

Furthermore, the man grabbed the woman, pushed her to the ground and restrained her from leaving the home. She was able to release herself from the man and ran to her phone where she called police.

Officers then arrived to the scene and located the couple. Officers arrested 29-year old, Kaleb Flaherty and charged him with domestic battery, criminal restraint and robbery.

Salina Police arrested a man after assaulting his girlfriend about a game they were playing with friends 

A Salina man was arrested after threatening to stab a female at a motel.

According to the Salina Police Department on Saturday, May 31st a 41-year old female was staying at the Hastings Inn on 217 S. Broadway. She had a male acquaintance who lived at the motel as well, and walked over to his room as she offered to take his 12-year old son to see a family member.

When the woman arrived to his room, the male reportedly became upset and told her that he was going to stab her several times. After the threat, the woman fled the scene.

Police say, a witness was with the woman when the threat happened and made the report to authorities. Officers then contacted the female victim by phone and she told police that she was afraid of the male suspect's threat.

Officers then arrived to the motel and located the suspect in his room. They arrested 43-year old, Jere Thomas and charged him with criminal threat.

Arrest made at a Salina motel after a man threatened to stab a woman

Salina Police are currently searching for two male suspects who assaulted, threatened and abandoned a woman at an alleyway.

According to the Salina Police Department, a 42-year old female had her pain medication stolen by a known male acquaintance on Wednesday, May 14th. She did not report the incident, because the male promised to give it back to her.&nbsp;

At a later date on Friday, May 31st the same male arrived in a vehicle to the woman's unknown location to give back her pain medication. However, the female got into the man's vehicle and another male subject was inside as well.&nbsp;

Reportedly, they drove around Salina for about 15 minutes and finally stopped at an alleyway on the 900 block of Gypsum. Both males then told the woman to get out of the vehicle. 

Police say, she did not get out of the vehicle fast enough and both men forcibly pushed her out, causing minor injuries on the woman. Both suspects then kicked and choked her and said to the woman they were going to "kill her."

Before the male suspects left the scene, they stole the female victim's cell phone and a total of $345 she had. The victim then called police on a nearby public phone and stated to authorities what happened.&nbsp;

The two male suspects are aged 27 and 40 and are both white. Police say the suspects were driving a Tan Hummer.

KANSAS CITY - On Sunday, ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that the Kansas City Royals would officially be calling up minor league slugger&nbsp;Jac Caglianone.

Caglianone was drafted by the Royals with the sixth overall pick in last year's 2024 MLB draft and played just 50 games in the minors before getting the call. 

In his limited minor league tenure, Caglianone was spectacular,&nbsp;blasting 15 home runs and 56 RBIs while hitting .322 and slugging .593.

As of June 2nd, the Royals do have a winning record at 31-29, but sit in fourth place amidst a stacked AL Central, and a game out of the AL's third wild card spot.

While Kansas City's pitching has been spectacular this season with the league's second-best ERA (3.13), the Royals sit just 15th in MLB in batting average, and 26th in slugging percentage, two areas KC hopes Caglianone can help them improve down the home stretch.

Royals call up minor league slugger Jac Caglianone 

WICHITA, Kan. (June 1, 2025)—Andrew Cossetti tallied three RBIs, and three Wichita arms combined for a 6-0 shutout victory over the Tulsa Drillers at Equity Bank Park. Four runs came across for the Wind Surge in the first inning, and Wichita added a few more along the way to knot the series up even in the matinee finale.&nbsp;

Connor Prielipp, Pierson Ohl, and Joel Cesar combined for the fifth shutout win of the season for the Wind Surge. The trio combined to strike out eight men, with just one walk going against them. Ohl improved to 3-1 after taking the win, striking out four men over four innings of one-hit baseball as the first man out of the bullpen.&nbsp;

Wichita scored four times in the top of the first on the backs of an RBI single by Andrew Cossetti and six walks. The Wind Surge batted around in the inning.&nbsp;

Cossetti nearly left the yard on a double off the very top of the left field wall in the bottom of the fourth to score Noah Cardenas and proved a 2-0 lead for Wichita over four frames.

Prielipp struck out four batters and walked one over four innings of four-hit baseball, pushing him into the Top 5 rankings on the staff in strikeouts after his start today.&nbsp;

Another bases-loaded walk gave the Wind Surge a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the eighth. Cesar kept things quiet in the ninth to secure the shutout win and a series tie.&nbsp;

Wind Surge Even Series With Shutout Of Drillers

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Five Wildcats qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championship on Saturday (May 31) on the final day of the NCAA West Preliminary at E.B. Cushing Stadium in Bryan-College Station, Texas.

Senior Shalom Olotu qualified for her second event at nationals in the women’s triple jump, juniors Sharie Enoe and Tamaiah Koonce each earned bids in the women’s high jump and discus, respectively, while fellow juniors Safhia Hinds and Jourdin Edwards collected nods in the women’s 400-meter hurdles.

All five are advancing to the NCAA Outdoor Championship for the first time in their respective careers. Olotu had already qualified in the women’s long jump on Thursday (May 29) with a new personal-best mark.

With its five national bids on Saturday, Kansas State will send a total of nine athletes in eight events to the NCAA Championship, which is set for Wednesday-Saturday, June 11-14 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. They will be joined by senior Monique Hardy (women’s hammer), sophomore Riley Marx (men’s javelin), freshman Selva Prabhu (men’s triple jump) and senior Emil Uhlin (men’s decathlon).

For the second time in three days, Olotu posted a personal-best mark to qualify for her second event at the national meet to place 11th and earn one of the 12 qualifying spots in the triple jump. Her leap of 13.45m (44’-1 ½”) was not only a personal high but ranks as the No. 5 all-time outdoor mark in K-State history. It is the best performance by any Wildcat in the event in four years since Chantoba Bright recorded a jump of 13.53m (44’-4 ¾”) at the 2021 Guyana Senior National Championships.

Olotu had already qualified in the long jump on Thursday (May 29) with a new personal-best mark of 6.44m (21’ 1 ½”) (0.7) to finish ninth. Her performance ranked as the No. 4 best outdoor mark in school history in the event, as she recorded a new personal best in the event for the first time in two years.

Koonce placed sixth in the discus with a season-best mark of 55.99m (183’-8”). It was her best throw in the event in more than a year since her personal-best toss of 56.14m (184’-2”) at the 2024 Ward Haylett Invitational. It was also more than 10 feet better than her effort at the 2025 Big 12 Championship (52.88m/173’-6”) and nearly 3 feet better than her mark at last year’s West Preliminary.

Enoe continued her impressive spring in the high jump, placing fourth in the event with a mark of 1.84m (6’-0 ½”). She was one of four athletes to hit 1.84m on her first attempt but placed fourth overall due hitting her previous heights of 1.76m (5’9 ¼”) and 1.81m (5’-11 ¼”) on her second attempt. She has now recorded a mark of 1.8m in the high jump in all four outdoor meets, including her season-best mark of 1.88m (6’-2”) to finish as the runner-up at the 2025 Big 12 Championship.

Enoe will look to replicate her First Team All-America honors in the high jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships, where she tied for eighth place with clearance of 1.85m.

Hinds and Edwards each qualified in the women’s 400-meter hurdles with fourth- and seventh-place finishes, respectively, while senior Ludivine Aubert placed 19th with a time of 58.38. Hinds recorded a time of 56.34, which was her second-fastest mark of the season and the fastest since winning the 2025 Big 12 Championship in 55.90 seconds. Edwards ran a personal-best time of 56.73, which represented the fourth- fastest time in K-State’s all-time top-10.

The NCAA Championship kicks off Wednesday, June 11 with Marx in the finals of the men’s javelin and Uhlin in the first five events of the decathlon.
